Video to GIF
Pick a few seconds of any video and turn them into a sharp, looping GIF.
To make a GIF from a video, drop the video into the Video to GIF tool, set a Start time and Duration, choose a Frame rate and Width, then click Make GIF and download the result. FFmpeg builds a custom 256-colour palette in a first pass and applies it in a second, which gives cleaner colours than a one-pass conversion.
FFmpeg (about 30 MB) is downloaded once on first use and cached by your browser. Speed depends on your device.
How do I make a GIF from a video?
- Drop a video onto the drop zone, or click to browse. MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV all work.
- Set Start (hh:mm:ss or seconds) to the moment the GIF should begin, and Duration in seconds, up to 30.
- Choose a Frame rate. 12 fps is the default; 8 fps (smallest) for reactions, 24 fps (smoothest) for motion.
- Choose a Width from 320 px to 800 px. Height follows automatically.
- Click Make GIF, then download the GIF when the preview appears.
GIF is a 1989 format that stores at most 256 colours per frame and compresses poorly, so a good converter has to be clever about both. This tool runs FFmpeg in two passes. The first pass (palettegen) scans your clip and picks the 256 colours that best represent it; the second pass (paletteuse) maps each frame to that palette with dithering. The result has far fewer banding artefacts than the generic web-safe palette most one-pass converters fall back on.
Size is the thing to manage. At the default 480 px and 12 fps, expect about 1 to 3 MB per 5 seconds, so a 10 second clip is already 2 to 6 MB. Halving the frame rate to 8 fps roughly halves the file; going to 24 fps doubles it. Width has an even bigger effect because it scales pixels in both directions: 800 px is nearly three times the data of 480 px. For chat apps and forums, 320 or 480 px at 8 or 12 fps is plenty.
Keep clips short. Reactions land in 2 to 4 seconds and most GIFs stop being watched after 6. The Duration cap of 30 seconds is there to stop a browser tab producing a 50 MB file, and if you need something longer or higher quality, a short MP4 or WebM is smaller and looks better on every platform that supports video, which today is nearly all of them.
The conversion runs in your browser using FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly; the video is never uploaded. Both passes decode the frames, so a 5 second clip at 480 px typically takes 5 to 15 seconds on a laptop and a little longer on a phone. The FFmpeg engine (about 30 MB) is downloaded once and cached, after which the tool works offline.
How it works: this tool uses FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly (ffmpeg.wasm), loaded into your browser. No server is involved, so Kilnfile never sees your file. Last reviewed 20 September 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my GIF so large?
GIF is an inefficient format: every frame is stored almost like a separate image. At 480 px and 12 fps a 5 second clip is about 1 to 3 MB. Reduce the Width, drop to 8 fps or shorten the Duration; each change roughly halves the size.
Why do the colours look grainy?
GIF allows only 256 colours per frame, so gradients such as skies and skin tones are dithered. The two-pass palette used here reduces this a lot compared with basic converters, but it cannot remove the limit. Clips with flat colours and sharp edges convert best.
Can I make a GIF longer than 30 seconds?
Not with this tool. A 30 second GIF at moderate settings is already 10 MB or more and will be rejected or recompressed by most sites. Trim the video and share it as a short MP4 instead.
Does the GIF have sound?
No. The GIF format has no audio track at all, so the soundtrack is dropped. If you need sound, keep the clip as a video and use the Trim Video tool.
Is the video uploaded?
No. Frames are decoded and the GIF is assembled inside your browser using FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. The file never leaves your device and there is no signup or watermark.
