Markdown to HTML
Convert Markdown, including GitHub tables and task lists, into HTML you can copy.
To convert Markdown to HTML, paste the Markdown into the Input box and click Convert to HTML; the output panel shows the HTML source, which you can copy into a page, CMS or email. Tick Wrap in a full HTML document to add the html, head and body tags. It uses the marked library and runs in your browser.
How do I convert Markdown to HTML?
- Paste your Markdown into the Input box: a README, blog post, notes from Obsidian or Notion, or a snippet.
- Tick Wrap in a full HTML document if you want a complete page with html, head and body tags rather than a fragment.
- Click Convert to HTML, or wait a moment for the output to update.
- Review the HTML in the output panel; it is shown as source code, not rendered.
- Click Copy output to paste it into your site, CMS or email tool, or Download to save an .html file.
The converter uses marked, one of the most widely used Markdown parsers in JavaScript, with GitHub Flavoured Markdown enabled. That means the basics (headings, emphasis, links, images, block quotes, ordered and unordered lists, inline code and fenced code blocks) plus the GitHub extensions people expect: pipe tables, task lists with [ ] and [x] checkboxes, ~~strikethrough~~ and automatic linking of bare URLs. Output follows CommonMark conventions, so a heading becomes a plain <h2> and a paragraph a plain <p> with no extra classes or inline styles.
The output is raw HTML text, not a rendered preview. That is deliberate: the point is to get markup you can paste into a WordPress or Ghost HTML block, a Shopify product description, a static site template, a Mailchimp or HubSpot email editor, or a component in a React or Vue project. If you want to see how it looks, paste the HTML into a blank .html file or your CMS preview.
Wrap in a full HTML document adds the doctype, html, head and body around the fragment, giving a file that opens directly in a browser. Leave it off when the HTML is going inside an existing page, which is the more common case. Line breaks inside a paragraph are joined into one line as CommonMark requires; end a line with two spaces or a backslash to force a <br>.
Fenced code blocks become <pre><code> elements with the language name preserved as a class, so a syntax highlighter on your site can pick it up. HTML embedded in the Markdown is passed through unchanged, so be careful converting content from untrusted sources. Everything runs as JavaScript in your browser tab; your drafts and notes are never transmitted or stored, and a 100-page document converts in a fraction of a second.
How it works: this tool uses plain JavaScript running in your browser tab. No server is involved, so Kilnfile never sees your file. Last reviewed 20 September 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Does it support tables and task lists?
Yes. GitHub Flavoured Markdown is enabled, so pipe tables become <table> elements, task lists become list items with checkboxes, strikethrough becomes <del> and bare URLs are linked automatically. Standard CommonMark syntax is fully supported as well.
Why is the output showing HTML code instead of formatted text?
Because the tool produces HTML source for you to paste elsewhere, not a preview. Copy the output into your CMS, template or an .html file to see it rendered. If you only want to read the Markdown formatted, an editor with a preview pane is the better tool.
Why are my single line breaks disappearing?
CommonMark treats a single newline inside a paragraph as a space, so consecutive lines merge. To force a line break, end the line with two spaces or a backslash, and to start a new paragraph leave a blank line.
Can I convert HTML back to Markdown?
Not with this tool; it only goes one way. For the reverse, a tool such as Turndown or Pandoc will convert HTML to Markdown. If you have both versions and want to see what changed, use the Diff Checker.
Is my Markdown uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser tab and nothing is sent to a server or stored, so it is fine for unpublished drafts, internal documentation and private notes.
