Merge PDF
Combine several PDF files into one document, in the order you choose, entirely in your browser.
To merge PDF files, drop them onto Kilnfile's Merge PDF tool, put them in the order you want and click Merge PDFs; the combined PDF is built in your browser and never uploaded. Pages keep their original size, rotation and quality because the tool copies them rather than re-rendering them. There is no signup, file limit or watermark.
How do I merge PDF files?
- Drop two or more PDF files onto the drop zone, or click it to pick them from your device.
- Use the up and down arrows next to each file to set the order they will appear in the merged document.
- Remove any file you added by mistake using the remove button next to its name.
- Click Merge PDFs and wait a moment while the pages are copied into one new file.
- Download the merged PDF, then open it to check the page order before you send it.
Merge PDF copies every page from each source file into a single new PDF using pdf-lib, an open-source library that runs inside your browser. Pages are copied as objects rather than re-rendered, so text stays selectable, vector graphics stay sharp and the original page sizes and rotations are preserved. A mix of A4 and US Letter pages, or portrait and landscape pages, will simply sit side by side in the output. Bookmarks and interactive form fields from the source files may not survive the merge, so add them again afterwards if you rely on them.
Because there are no options to set, the only decision is the order. The first file in the list becomes the first pages of the result, so put a cover sheet or contents page at the top. If you only need some pages from a file, run it through Split PDF or Delete PDF Pages first, then merge the trimmed copies. The merged file is roughly the sum of the input sizes; if it ends up too big to email (Gmail stops at 25 MB, Outlook.com at 20 MB), run it through Compress PDF next.
There is no cap on the number of files or pages, and no file size limit other than the memory available to your browser tab. Merging a few hundred pages takes a second or two on a modern laptop; very large scanned files of several hundred megabytes can take longer and may fail on a phone with limited memory. Password-protected files must be unlocked first with Unlock PDF, because pdf-lib cannot read an encrypted document without the password.
Everything happens on your device. Kilnfile does not upload your PDFs to a server, does not store them and cannot see their contents; you can confirm this by loading the page, switching off your Wi-Fi and merging anyway. That makes the tool suitable for contracts, medical letters, payslips and other documents you would not want on a third-party server. The tool is free, needs no account and adds no watermark.
How it works: this tool uses pdf-lib and PDF.js (Mozilla), open-source libraries loaded into your browser. No server is involved, so Kilnfile never sees your file. Last reviewed 20 September 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change the order of the files before merging?
Yes. Once the files are in the list, use the up and down arrows next to each name to move them. The order in the list is the order of the pages in the merged PDF.
Does merging reduce the quality of my PDFs?
No. Pages are copied as they are, not re-rendered, so text, images and vector drawings are identical to the originals. The merged file is about the combined size of the inputs.
Is there a limit on how many PDFs I can merge?
There is no fixed limit on files or pages. The only practical ceiling is your device's memory, which matters only for very large scanned documents running to hundreds of megabytes.
Can I merge a password-protected PDF?
Not directly. Remove the password first with the Unlock PDF tool (you need to know the password), then merge the unlocked copy. You can put a password back on the merged file with Protect PDF.
Are my files uploaded to Kilnfile's servers?
No. The merge runs in your browser using the open-source pdf-lib library, and the finished file is saved straight to your device. Nothing is sent to us or stored anywhere.
